Painting, cooking, drawing, quilting, knitting and embroidery are just a few of the hobbies I’ve tried over the years. The only ones I’ve kept up with are cooking and painting. I’m a pretty good cook and an okay watercolorist, but up until now I’ve employed the “seat of my pants” method of instruction. Cooking I learned by doing, and having a hoarding problem when it comes to cookbooks. I took one painting class in high school and one figure drawing class in college, but other than that, I just wing it.
I’ve wanted to take a cooking class and more painting classes, but well, you know ... life gets in the way. Not enough time, not enough money, no classes offered in my area, or the class I could afford was full.
The worst reason I found to not pursue instruction was that indulging my hobbies felt like just that, indulging. When the kids were small, I simply could not justify a $300 class fee when the boys needed shoes every other week or their karate school needed paying. Then it was the sunroom that needs a new window, or a car that needs new struts.
Like most women, I felt compelled to see to the needs of everyone and everything except myself. But I’ve come to a new understanding of my life and I’ve decided that taking classes, spending money on supplies or taking time to paint or draw or knit is not indulging, it’s nourishing. Nourishing my soul, nourishing my creativity, and nourishing my mental health. Everything I do to be a happier person makes me a better wife, better mom, better employee, and a better friend.
Once I committed to taking the class I’ve always wanted to, I ran into a problem. There aren’t any in my area being offered right now. I don’t live in a rural community, but I don’t live in or near a big city either. Art classes are few and far between, and cooking classes are even more rare. So, I did what I often do, I turned to Google and the all-seeing, all-knowing search engine led me to the solution.

I spent most of yesterday and part of today digging around the Bluprint website and it is awesome! They offer online classes for all levels in cooking, painting, drawing, quilting, knitting, jewelry making and many more. It's affordable and the ultimate in flexibility - I can watch the class whenever I want.
For $79.99 per year, or $7.99 per month, you get unlimited access to classes + projects, an extra 15% off supplies (though I probably will get a lot of mine at Walmart or Michael’s) and 12-Own-Forever Classes. If you don’t want the commitment of a subscription, you can purchase individual classes starting at around $12. For a limited time, they are offering a holiday special, $59.99 for a year subscription and I jumped on it, completely leaving the free trial behind! I’ve also applied to be an affiliate because I’m so thrilled by this concept, I’m totally going to give them a spot of honor on my website.
I can’t wait to start my first brush in hand lesson! With the holidays right around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better. Everyone I know will be getting a painting, or hand-made jelly, or custom jewelry, whether they want them or not!
