Traveling alone, especially as a woman, can be such a scary thought that you might dismiss the idea before even giving it serious consideration. While you need to be more mindful of your actions and take some extra precautions if you want to travel solo, going it alone can be done safely.

Maybe you’re dreaming of visiting some far-off place but don’t have a friend that has the means or the time off from work to travel, or your kids are too busy raising their own families, or your spouse isn’t well enough or isn’t interested in traveling. There could be many reasons that you might be considering traveling alone, but don’t let the fear of doing it on your own stop you.

If you want take your trip completely on your own, AARP has a great article with safety tips for traveling alone. Women on the Road has tons of tips and pages of advice on everything from packing to budgeting for your trip to providing a handy questionnaire to help you decide where to travel next.

If you’d like the extra security of traveling with a group there are many companies that provide tours for solo women travelers. You can experience your favorite destination along side other women with similar interests and the moxie to travel on their own, just like you! These groups could save you a significant amount of money as well, since most travel groups charge for two people and you rarely get a cost break if you are travelling alone. Specialty groups that cater to the single traveler will pair you with a roommate and won’t financially punish you for traveling alone. If you’re open to sharing a room with a stranger, this option is the most cost effective. If you are willing to spend more to have private sleeping quarters, you still have the added benefits of traveling with companions and having a professional tour guide.

Here are just a few of the organizations that offer trips for women traveling alone:

Women Traveling Together

Tours for Active Women over 50. Perfect for Unaccompanied / Solo / Traveling Alone. Safe, High-Quality, Escorted Small Groups.

Women Traveling Together® was started in 1997 by a 40-year old business woman who desperately wanted to travel, but didn’t want to go alone or travel as a single on a couple’s tour. Unable to find a ready-made solution that met her needs, Debra Asberry spent seven months interviewing women in order to design a travel company that catered to the needs of active women traveling unaccompanied. While most women who travel with WTT are 50+, all adult women are welcome.

Trips include destinations in the U.S. like Key west, New York City, New Orleans and more. They also have a large number of trips to Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, the Caribbean and more.

The Women’s Travel Group

We are women who love to travel and will not wait for friends. Most of us are traveling solo; many for the first time. We are multi ethnic, geographically diverse and range in age from 30’s to healthy 80’s. We are married and single.

We are casual, most women travel coach, some upgrade. Many women ask for a share; others prefer a single room. We are active women, who walk in our normal day. We prefer well-paced touring, not ‘vacations that leave you needing vacations’. We are value-conscious, never stingy. Our group requires excellent hotels and we enjoy fine dining. We prefer the ease and comfort of guaranteed small group travel. We like smart itineraries, which avoid tourist traps and bus tour restaurants.

They also offer specialty trips like Italian Cooking in Tuscany and Spa-Fitness-Yoga excursions in Mexico.

Other travel groups for women include Wander Woman, Gutsy Women Travel, and Affordable Adventures for Women.

This Halloween, put fear aside, give some serious thought into taking that trip to Tibet or Africa or the Grand Canyon, and get there and live your most meaningful life!
